Lindsay Lohan goes nude to recreate Marilyn

The Mean Girls star bared all in the latest issue of the American magazine for renowned photographer Bert Stern who actually shot Monroe for a similar shoot way back in 1962, shortly before the screen legend died.

Stern photographed Monroe in 1962 at the Hotel Bel-Air in California, six weeks before she was found dead of an overdose of barbiturates.

The pictures, for Vogue magazine, show Monroe posing nude with some scarves and jewellery as her accessories and sipping champagne.

The veteran photographer recreated the same images, this time with a nude Lohan in a blond wig at the same hotel.

When it came to being nude before the camera, Lohan said: "I was comfortable with it.”

"I didn't have to put much thought into it. I mean, Bert Stern? Doing a Marilyn shoot? When is that ever going to come up? It's really an honour," The Sun quoted her, as telling the mag.

Stern said that he found women like Lohan and her tabloid companions Paris Hilton and Britney Spears "interesting".

"They're girls that draw attention to their notoriety and their celebrity through their behaviour," he said.

"I thought she was a natural, not at all squeamish," he added.

Kenyans are not getting the HIV medicines

Thousands of uprooted Kenyans are not getting the HIV medicines they need to survive, and rising sexual attacks in camps stand to further spread the disease, public health experts say.

About 15,000 of the more than 250,000 people who have fled political, ethnic and revenge attacks in the month since Kenya's disputed presidential election are HIV-positive, according to Kenyan Health Ministry figures cited by UNAIDS.

Of that group, 2,550 were taking anti-retroviral therapy to suppress the virus that causes AIDS before escalating violence forced them out of their homes and cut off their access to the drugs that must be taken continuously to work.

An unknown additional number of HIV patients are marooned in their homes, missing treatments because local health clinics are closed, or because they are too afraid to risk the journey.

"We don't know where our patients are," Florence Muli-Musiime, deputy director-general of the Kenya-based African Medical and Research Foundation, said in a statement.

"We had a very good tracking system using our contacts in the community, but this has now broken down," she said.

Elisabeth Byrs, a spokeswoman for the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Geneva, said Kenya's HIV crisis could become much more acute unless tensions calm soon.

"Without adequate nutrition, water and sanitation, and vital AIDS services, people living with HIV are at risk of succumbing to opportunistic infections and more rapid disease progression," she said.

Byrs also warned that HIV transmission risks were extremely high in camps where sexual attacks on women and children are on the rise. Many have been raped while going to the latrine at night, and few are seeking immediate medical care.

A preliminary report by the U.N. population fund and UNICEF have further found that desperate girls and women in Kenya have also been trading sex for food, protection and transportation, further increasing their exposure to the deadly virus.

Situation fluid

Of the estimated 934,000 Kenyans living with HIV, 165,000 were getting government-supported anti-retroviral treatment as of December 2007, said UNAIDS spokeswoman Jacqueline Makokha.

Interruptions of the combination drug therapy, or dilutions of the dose patients take, greatly increase the risk that traditional drugs will no longer suppress HIV. Alternative or "second-line" treatments are much more expensive.

Makokha said it was difficult to keep track of HIV patients in the chaos, which was sparked by accusations that the Dec. 27 election of President Mwai Kibaki in power was rigged.

"The situation is very fluid. People are moving in and out of camps in some areas, and in some areas new people are coming into camps," she said in a telephone interview from Nairobi.

Further complicating matters, health workers said possibly large numbers of people infected with tuberculosis -- a highly contagious disease that is especially deadly for HIV patients -- are also going undetected in Kenya's camps and cities.

"HIV patients are receiving sub-optimal treatment, and because tuberculosis is not diagnosed, it is not treated," said Ian Van Engelgem, a Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) physician in Nairobi's Kibera slum.

"It is a very explosive cocktail," he said by telephone.

Kenya's national HIV prevalence is five percent, although some areas including Nairobi and Nyanza provinces have rates as high as 10 percent, according to UN figures.

Teenagers Kill Child in "Mortal Kombat"

Two teenagers accused of beating a seven-year-old girl to death are said to have been imitating moves taken from Mortal Kombat.
According to a report on CNN, 17-year-old Lamar Roberts and 16-year-old Heather Trujillo were babysitting Trujillo's half-sister, Zoe Garcia, when the violence began. According to Roberts, he was playing videogames in the downstairs of the house while the sisters "wrestled" upstairs, but a witness claimed in an affidavit that Roberts said he had kicked the child. When asked why he didn't stop when the seven-year-old asked him to, Roberts said, "I don't know, I was drunk."
The pair attempted to revive the girl by putting her under running water and attempting CPR before calling 911. She later died at hospital; an autopsy found she had a broken wrist, over 20 bruises, swelling of the brain and bleeding in her neck muscles and under her spine.
While it's unclear whether the pair had actually played Mortal Kombat, a report in the Denver Post said Trujillo claimed they were "acting out" the game, while the Rocky Mountain News quoted police as saying she tripped her sister, "punched her in the stomach, karate chopped her lower arms, punched and pinched the victim's thighs, kicked her in the shins, slapped her stomach and buttocks and poked at the victim's chest." The Rocky Mountain News article went on to quote a report stating that "violent videogames may be more harmful than violent TV and movies because they are interactive, engrossing and require the player to identify with the aggressor."
However, the Denver Post also said that at least four neighbors as well as a school teacher said they suspected the girl had been the victim of ongoing abuse, which they had reported prior to the child's death.

Bomb hoax on North Sea platform

Fourteen helicopters and a Nimrod are scrambled in a major operation to airlift North Sea oil workers after a security alert.
A bomb threat earlier today on a North Sea accommodation platform, which is now being treated as a hoax, resulted in the evacuation of oil workers from the Safe Scandinavia platform.
Police made arrangements for a 23-year-old woman to be returned to shore from the platform.
"It is understood the incident was sparked by comments made by a woman on the installation", said a spokesman for the RAF Kinloss base in Scotland.
A police spokeswoman said the incident had been "very quickly contained" and that nobody had been arrested.
British defense officials said 14 helicopters had been sent to evacuate the Safe Scandinavia.
The platform is owned and operated by Prosafe, an Oslo-listed company.

Medical breakthrough : Breath tests to diagnose

Breath tests to diagnose major illnesses should be more widely used, university researchers said.
Staff at Swansea University are developing technology to enable patients to be given breath tests for diseases including diabetes, hepatitis and cirrhosis.
They say the method could save lives and money - and that patients could even self-diagnose at home with a shop-bought kit before seeing their GP.
Dr Masood Yousef, senior research assistant in the Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating at the university, said: "Breath samples are much easier to collect than blood and urine, for the patient as much as for the person collecting the sample. They can be collected anywhere by people with no medical training, and there are no associated biohazard risks.
"Overall, the procedure is likely to be much more cost effective than conventional methods, potentially saving the NHS a great deal of time and money. Someone could even buy a test at somewhere like Boots and be diagnosed at an early stage. There is great potential."
Dr Timothy Claypole, director of the Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating, said: "The work that we are doing now could well lead to the use of breath tests in routine medical examinations, long before patients show any physical symptoms. Ultimately, this technology will save lives. We're increasing its reliability, and increasing the range of diseases it can detect."
He said the new technology would make life easier for those with diabetes, who would not need to undergo as many blood tests if breath tests were available.
Studies have shown that high concentrations of certain compounds in a person's breath can indicate that they have a disease. The smell of pear drops is associated with diabetes, and ammonia is linked to hepatitis.
Dr Yousef added: "If unique markers for specific diseases can be recognised earlier than traditional techniques, then there is immense potential to revolutionise early disease diagnosis before any symptoms have developed, and without the need for invasive procedures."
The equipment used by the university was funded by a Welsh Assembly Government grant - initially given to research the level of solvents inhaled by workers who operate print machinery.

The niece of a Labour MP is in custody in Paris after allegedly slashing her lover's throat in a case said to be inspired by the murder of Meredith Kercher, it was reported today.
Jessica Davies, the niece of Quentin Davies, who defected from the Tory Party in the summer, is said to have attacked Olivier Mugnier in a drunken sex game.
Detectives said she was influenced by coverage of the murder of Miss Kercher in Perugia, Italy, earlier this month.
Three people including a female flatmate are being held in Italy for allegedly cutting the 21-year-old British student's throat after launching a sexual attack on her.
Ms Davies, 28, is said to have tried to intensify an "extreme sexual experience" by putting a knife to the man's throat.
But after slicing an artery, she is thought to have stabbed him six or seven times in anger and frustration.
A French police source said: "She has mentioned the case in Italy, which has received a great deal of publicity here.
"The similarities between the allegations in both cases are very clear. It may be that the alleged killer here was inspired by what is said to have happened in Italy."
Reports said Davies turned to drink and drugs after splitting from her French fiance.
She is then said to have started sleeping with men she picked up in bars.
She is reported to have chatted to unemployed Mr Mugnier, 24, on Saturday in an Irish pub near her flat.
She invited him home, where the incident took place.
Davies is said to have made a "rambling" call for an ambulance and Mr Mugnier died at the scene shortly after paramedics arrived there.
Mr Davies, 63, is believed to be in Cambodia on a business trip and has not been contactable.
The Foreign Office said it was aware of the detention of a Jessica Davies but had no further details.

The out-of-this world visuals in the new Star Trek movie will actually be based on science from our solar system. A NASA planetary scientist has joined the film's production team to ensure the scientific accuracy of the movie's astronomical scenes.
As the leader of the Imaging Science team on NASA'S Cassini mission at Saturn, Carolyn Porco has guided a crew of scientists and engineers responsible for illustrating the mission's results.
Porco now will also work on the new Paramount Pictures film as a consultant on planetary science and imagery.
"This is a fabulous opportunity to bring to a wider audience the discoveries we've made at Saturn, and the spectacular sights we have seen there," Porco said. "And what better way to do that than to make use of those discoveries in the crafting of imagery for one of the most popular movie franchises of all time."
Porco was invited to join the Star Trek Team by the movie's director and producer, J.J. Abrams.
"Carolyn and her team have produced images that are simply stunning," Abrams said. "I'm thrilled that she will help guide our production in creating an authentic vision of space, one that immerses our audience in a visual experience as awe-inspiring as what Carolyn's cameras have captured."
Abrams, who co-created, produced, and directed the TV series "Lost," did the same for the TV series "Alias" and directed the film "Mission: Impossible III," was present at the 2007 TED conference in Monterey, California where Porco spoke of the recent findings from the Cassini mission.

VENICE, Italy -- Sir Elton John and Canadian filmmaker David Furnish shopped and lunched at Harry's Bar on Saturday, honeymooning in Venice after tying the knot in a civil union ceremony in Britain this week, news reports said. The Venice daily The New Venice and Mestre featured a photo of the couple on the front page of its Saturday editions, saying that the singer and filmmaker had chosen to spend their honeymoon in the romantic canal city where John keeps a home. The couple exchanged vows and diamond wedding bands Wednesday in Windsor, capping the first week of legalized same-sex civil unions in the United Kingdom. The ANSA news agency said the two arrived in Venice on Thursday and were staying at John's home on Giudecca, one of the islands of Venice's lagoon. The two took a water taxi to St. Mark's Square and lunched at the nearby Harry's Bar, then shopped in some of the area's fancy stores, ANSA said.

French Army conspired in the Rwandan genocide of 1994

One of the most controversial episodes in France's recent history is to come under legal scrutiny after a judge opened a formal inquiry into allegations that the French Army conspired in the Rwandan genocide of 1994. The move, which will renew debate over the actions of Francois Mitterrand, France's late president, is embarrassing for Paris at a time when it is struggling to maintain its influence in Africa. Despite attempts by the French Defence Ministry to block the case, Jacques Baillet, the prosecutor at the army tribunal, has begun an investigation into the role of France's troops during the massacres. An estimated 800,000 Rwandans were killed in the violence that followed the death of then Rwandan president Juvenal Habyarimana in an aircraft crash. Most of the victims were Tutsis, slaughtered by the rival Hutu tribe. The 2500-strong French peacekeeping force sent to Rwanda by Mitterrand is accused not only of failing to stop the genocide, but also of actively participating in it. The accusations are contained in a lawsuit filed by six survivors who say they saw atrocities committed with the complicity of the French Army. Mr Baillet rejected four of the plaintiffs on the ground that they had not suffered personally. Although French Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie described the claims as outlandish, the prosecutor decided two witnesses were sufficiently credible to warrant an inquiry. One is Aurea Mukakalisa, who was raped by Hutu militia in a refugee camp set up and controlled by the French Army. "The Hutu militiamen entered the camp and designated the Tutsis, who were forced to leave the camp by French soldiers," says Ms Mukakalisa, who was 27 at the time. "I saw the militia kill the Tutsis who had left the camp. I saw French soldiers themselves kill Tutsis using knives." Her brother, Felicien, was a victim at the Murambi camp. Hisbody has never been found. The second witness, Innocent Gisanura, who was 14 at the time, was among thousands of Tutsis who fled into the Biserero forests in the hope of escaping the violence. "We were attacked and chased by militiamen," he says in his statement. "French soldiers watched what happened from their vehicles without doing anything." The claims have revived the debate over France's ambition to retain influence in Africa - an ambition that shaped much of Mitterrand's foreign policy. Under his presidency, France armed and trained Habyarimana's forces, which critics say formed the backbone of the Hutu militia during the genocide. Mitterrand then authorised the French peacekeeping mission, known as Operation Turquoise. Rwandan Tutsis say French troops first failed to stop the killings, and then established a buffer zone that enabled the killers to escape. These claims have poisoned relations between Paris and Kigali. Rwandan President Paul Kagame has accused France of failing to tell the truth about Operation Turquoise. In 1998, a French parliamentary committee attempted to investigate France's role in the genocide. But most of the evidence it sought was classified as a state secret. The French Army is already facing a legal inquiry into allegations that soldiers killed an injured rebel during a peacekeeping mission in Ivory Coast in May.

Teenager charged with indecent exposur

A teenager has been charged with indecent exposure after he was caught trying to have sex with a female mannequin on display at an arts centre.
Security guards found Michael Plentyhorse, 18, sprawled with the dummy on the floor with his trousers and pants down.
Police spokesman Loren McManus said: "There was inappropriate activity between him and the mannequin.
"That's the only way I know how to put it."
Guards said they had noticed several times before that the dummy's clothes had been removed at the centre in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, US.
If convicted, Plentyhorse may be registered as a sex offender.
Hope Matchan, of the prosecutors' department, said: "People might say it's relatively harmless.
"But I certainly would want to know if this person was my neighbour."

Naked Truth about Sex

Review of Naked Truth by Lakita Garth brings insights from her travels as an abstinence speaker to her book, The Naked Truth about Sex, Love, and Relationships. Written for an audience of teenagers, Garth engages the reader through stories from her childhood, friends of hers and her experience testifying before the Senate Appropriations Committee.

Readers are challenged to look at the naked truth about sex and not the lies they have heard such as safe sex, “It won’t happen to me” and “Marriage is just a piece of paper”. Good decision making is encouraged and abstinence is a theme through out the book. Garth emphasizes the dangers of sexual transmitted diseases and takes a look at each of “America’s Most Unwanted”.

The book is fantastic, if it was written for non-Christian kids. Garth only used 15 pages out of her 168 pages referencing God or scriptural reasons to not have pre-martial sex. It was well written and amusing, and I would definitely pass it on to students at a local public school … if it didn’t mention God at all. For Christian kids, I found it lacking in reasons not to have sex from a Godly perspective. It simply wasn't strong enough for an audience of Christian teenagers and there are better books available today.

Men have lagged behind women in taking care of their health, but it's time to catch up. If you're worried about a health matter, going to the doctor is the best way to deal with it. What holds men back? When it comes to their health, men are notoriously bad at seeking help. Sometimes embarrassment gets in the way. Often, though, it's because of outdated attitudes such as "Men don't get ill" or "Pull yourself together" - which don't help men at all. Of course, another common reason why men delay seeking help is the false belief that if you ignore something, it will go away. In fact, most health problems are simply and easily treated, but the longer they're left, the less this is true. Not only does early treatment mean it's more likely to be successful, but it means less worry, fewer sleepless nights, and so on. Unlike women, men often don't ask each other for advice about health problems, but they should, because it may save a lot of unnecessary worry.

Fearing the worst: The big fear is that a symptom will turn out to be a life-threatening illness such as cancer. Actually, most health problems are far less serious. Take, for example, the urinary symptoms that one in three men over the age of 65 suffer: getting up at night to urinate, having to urinate more frequently during the day, feeling the need to urgently go then passing only a weak dribble. The most likely cause is benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate, which can be successfully treated.
Overcoming embarrassment: Another reason why men find it difficult to go and see the doctor is that they're frightened they'll stick out like a sore thumb. Traditionally, women are used to talking and asking about their health because they've had to go to the doctor for a variety of reasons: taking their child for immunisations, attending for family planning advice, antenatal care, cervical screening, and so on. Many men, on the other hand, aren't used to experiencing a doctor's surgery. They may be terrified that, even if they haven't got a problem that's located below the belly button and above the knees, everyone will think they have and know why they're there. Nowadays, men are pleasantly surprised when they go to the doctor. There will be other men in the waiting room - men who are there because of lung problems, heart problems, joint problems, rashes, in fact anything at all.
Exercise: More men than ever before are spending their working lives as well as their leisure time sitting down, making it more important than ever to take some exercise on a regular basis. Exercise makes your body stronger, fitter and more flexible. It protects your heart and bones, keeps your weight at an ideal level, helps to reduce stress and makes you feel good too.
Ways to stay fit
It doesn't matter what you do or where you do it - activity on a regular basis is what's important. Experts recommend that every man gets active for at least 20 to 30 minutes on at least five days of the week. You'll know if you're doing enough because you'll feel yourself breathing a little bit harder and faster, and your pulse will be faster than usual .It doesn't have to be the gym, either. Walking, cycling, swimming and running, are all simple, accessible and convenient ways to get a daily dose of exercise. Pick something that you enjoy. If it's going to feel like a chore then you're not going to do it.

Three types of exercise
Aerobic (also known as cardiovascular). Used to build up cardiovascular fitness and endurance, and to improve the absorption of oxygen by the lungs and its delivery around the body by the heart and circulation. Running, rowing and cycling are examples of good aerobic exercises.

Anaerobic. Used to build up strength. Exercises are performed against resistance, for instance weightlifting.

Stretching. Vital for developing the flexibility that protects muscles from injury.

Safe routine
Always warm up by doing five to ten minutes of light aerobic exercise such as running on the spot.

Stretch once the muscles are warmed up for about five minutes.

Perform your chosen exercise.

Cool down by doing light aerobic exercise again for five to ten minutes and performing a few stretches.

Drink water to replace any lost during your workout.

Body shapes - Men's Health - Body maintenance

There are many different body types around, and regrettably many are 'round'. But underneath all the padding and designer wear we can put each body into one of three categories.

The three main types:

1. ectomorphs - thin and wispy

2. mesomorphs - athletic and muscular

3. endomorphs - generously rounded or 'stout'

Your basic body type is greatly outside of your control - more to do with DNA, and your childhood lifestyle than anything else. So if you are over 18 and reading this, you are what you are, although you can fine tune what you already have.

Changing your body type

If you're looking to change the shape of your body the basic groundwork is the same.

• eat fresh, low fat and healthy food
• avoid large amounts of toxins such as alcohol and caffeine
• take regular exercise which should include elements of stamina (puffing), strength (grunting) and suppleness (bending)

If you have reached this state of physical nemesis you may wish to be more specific in adapting your training in order to develop characteristics of the body type which you favour.

Try adapting your training along the following lines:

If you want to be ectomorphic (long and thin):

• Do more aerobic exercise, running and biking and ensure you work at a steady state (70 per cent max heart rate). Avoid explosive activity.

• Use exercises that allow full range of movement - swimming, isokenetics or yoga and take more time to fully stretch each muscle.

• Concentrate on eating complex carbohydrates such as pasta and potatoes and drink plenty of tepid water.

If you want to be mesomorphic (athletic and muscular):

• Work on short bursts of explosive, dynamic and intense aerobic activity near to maximum effort - short sprints, jumping and punching.

• Do more weight-bearing exercise - pump iron. Use heavy weights, up to 90 per cent of your maximum capability and complete at least three sets of each exercise with no more than seven repetitions per set. Ideally isolate one muscle group at a time and work it until exhausted.

• You must have plenty of rest between each workout to allow the muscle to grow.

If you want to be endomorphic (rounded and stout):

• Buy a video, some beer, order a takeaway, sit back and enjoy.

GROOMING - Men's Health - Body maintenance

It's easy to take the skin for granted and not take care of it, and men are much more likely to do this than women. But the skin needs regular care and attention - particularly the areas that are exposed to the elements, such as the face. Late nights, stress, an unhealthy diet and too much sun all take their toll on the skin. It dries out, becomes flaky and cracked and looses its vitality. What's missing from most people's diet, that the skin needs in abundance, is water. A least two litres a day is essential, more in hot and humid weather. To remain healthy the skin also needs vitamin C and this is readily available from citrus fruits, fortified breakfast cereals, and fortified bread. Potatoes are also a good source of vitamin C too and since the vitamin C is found just below the skin having a baked potato means the vitamin C doesn't end up in the waste bin lost in the peelings. Moisturise regularly too, using a cream that contains vitamin E and UV protection. Many men regularly have facials nowadays to help revitalise their skin.

How to boost your immunity:

• get enough rest
• don't smoke
• drink alcohol within safe levels
• eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables
• drink at least eight glasses of water a day
• take time to relax and unwind

Cold sores

Something else that the skin needs to keep it healthy is zinc. This, and vitamin C, also helps to boost our immune system and keep it strong so that it can protect the body from infection. Stress, infection, being overtired, cold winds, and hot weather can all be responsible for waking up a cold sore when you would rather it remained asleep. It's possible to avoid cold sores by getting enough rest, eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, not smoking, and keeping alcohol to a minimum. Be sure to also apply a UV protection lip-balm a few times each day to protect against the effects of cold winds and bright sunlight. Tea-tree oil cream or aciclovir cream both have anti-viral properties and can shorten the duration and the severity of cold sores. Keep a tube of one or the other at home should the telltale tingle come your way.

Spots

If it's not cold sores then it's spots that appear at the wrong time and in the wrong place. Once again these are more likely to occur if you've become run-down. Try to avoid them - the same rules apply. Don't pick them. This won't make them disappear and will only serve to make them look worse, and more obvious. Topical treatments from the pharmacist or tea-tree oil gel or cream will help to dry spots up. Now you may wish to sit down for this next bit of advice. To hide the spot that appears on the day use a blemish or cover-up stick - which looks like a pencil. These are available from the make-up counter in large department stores, for example. Make-up specifically designed for men is available.

Skin cancer

The number of cases of skin cancer is increasing.

Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer and is:

• most common in younger people (age 20 to 35)

• caused by excess UV radiation exposure causing sunburn

• common among people who work indoors (because their skin is more easily damaged when they're exposed to the sun)

Everyone is at risk of skin cancer. Those most at risk are men with:

• fair skin
• freckles
• ginger hair
• lots of moles

If you notice any changes with your moles get them checked by your doctor. Look out for:

• increase in size
• change in shape
• change in color
• change in sensation - itchy, painful
• new redness or inflammation
• bleeding

Protect your skin

• stay in the shade between 11am and 3pm
• take care not to burn
• cover up with sleeves, caps, and shades
• apply sun protection cream regularly every two hours throughout the day using at least SPF 15
• don't use sunbeds
• if you need a tan then fake it

Brigitte Tullman didn't take losing very easily. After her roommate, Lisa Burgermeister, 20, began dating her ex-boyfriend, she decided to wipe out her roommate -- or more specifically, wipe out her hair. So the 20-year-old slipped an hair removal product into Burgermeister's shampoo. But that impulsive act backfired, burning Burgermeister's hands and landing the spurned woman in hot water. "Lisa's hands were quite badly burned," her doctor told the court. "I don't even want to consider what would have happened if she had washed her hair with it." Meanwhile, Tullman was charged with trying to inflict bodily harm and given a six-month suspended sentence by a court in Mainz. And Burgermeister is most likely being consoled by the ex-boyfriend, hair intact.

A German sex psychologist says more and more people are calling their true loves by a "pet" name -- which is only appropriate, when their partners are pooches. Inanimate objects are also popular ersatz mates.

Remember The Love Boat? How about the love ferry? German sex psychologist and researcher Volkmar Sigusch sees a trend toward people having love ties to inanimate objects -- such as a boat -- or to house pets, as well as having no emotional ties at all. The renowned academic, who heads the Frankfurt based German Society for Sex Research, recently published a book called Neosexualitäten, or neo-sexuality, in which he describes the "cultural change of love and perversion" in modern society. "We live in a situation where things that were once proscribed or embarrassing or shameful can now be expressed," he said. "Today we talk about things that used to be hidden." Two of the trends he sees are towards asexuality -- where for varied reasons people show no sexual desire at all -- and objectophilia, a sexual obsession with objects or house pets.

In his book, Sigusch describes a woman whose love life gave new meaning to the term partner-ship when she fell in love with a ferry. She thought about the boat obsessively, photographed it, then decorated the photographs. She was "enraptured like one in love," he wrote. The scientist also considers people to be objectophiles who treat their pets -- mostly cats and dogs, but sometimes lizards -- like beloved partners. They hug and kiss them, spoil them, take them on vacation, dress them up -- even send them to spas or summer camps. "Some love their pets more than they have ever loved a person," he said. Those who worry that there can be no future for such a union can take heart in Sigusch's prediction that it will only be a few decades before such "partnerships" are openly recognized.

Go ahead and kiss! It's good for you! Surveys show that Germans dispense with two to three kisses a day. Going by that figure, by the time they turn 70, they’ve spent 76 days just kissing. But kissing is no waste of time, and it's healthy too. Just puckering your lips as you prepare to smooch, exercises all 34 facial muscles at the same time, endowing zealous kissers with smooth, wrinkle-free skin. Americans Eddi Leven and Delphine Orha can probably boast the smoothest skin as they set a world record for the longest kiss: 17 days and 9 hours. U.S. researchers are convinced that kissing is the elixir to a happy, healthier life. They discovered in studies that people who leave home in the morning with a smooch from their beloved, are more likely to be professionally successful, pay less visits to the doctor and are less inclined to have accidents. From a scientific point of view, a passionate kiss is supposed to provide the same kick that a 25 gram chocolate bar can -- with a crucial advantage: it doesn’t make you fat! No wonder there are signs all over the exhibition that say, "Necking allowed!"

Loving, affectionate, passionate, tender, electrifying or simply unforgettable -- a kiss can be many things.

Know that dizzy feeling, pounding heart and weak-in-the-knees sensation after a long kiss? An exhibition in Berlin now sheds light on the hormones at play in the body when two people lock in a passionate embrace.
But not too many people would think of serotonin, phenylethylamin or norepinephrine while locked in a passionate embrace. What may sound incredulously long and difficult to pronounce, are in fact the chemical substances which have the command over the emotions of passion and love in the human body. To find out more about these chemical substances, a trip to an exhibition in Berlin might be worthwhile. Called "The Kiss. Magic and Chemistry: Our Body, Health and Nutrition," the exhibition, which began Thursday, is part of the Germany-wide "Year of Chemistry" and will be moving to Leipzig and Stuttgart later. Visitors to the exhibition can dive into a simulated laboratory of the human body through a multimedia tunnel where they can see and hear the reactions that a kiss can trigger within seconds: the breathing rate quickens, the pulse races, arteries expand, and an improved blood flow stimulates circulation.

Good old lovin' around for ages: According to ethnologists, mankind has been cuddling and making out since ancient times. Even Salomon’s song in the Bible makes a passionate appeal for a kiss: "Come and kiss me! Your love intoxicates me even more than wine." More historical evidence can be found in Roman poet Ovid's detailed description of the correct way to smooch in his "Ars amatoria" (Art of Loving). But though kissing may date back to time immemorial, science has only turned its attention towards it some 30 years ago, when it began analyzing the chemistry of the kiss as a hormonal bombshell in the body. Scientists have discovered that kissing is much like an energy injection, strengthening the immune system and reducing stress. "We now know a lot about hormones and their effects, though we still don’t know all the functions of the brain," Klaus Hartmann, who conceived the exhibition for the German research ministry, said.

Blame it on the chemicals: One thing is clear: it’s not the heart that’s responsible for passion and love, but rather a 100 billion nerve cells and 1000 neurotransmitters. A wildly passionate kiss sends out signals to the brain which trigger the mood-boosting hormone serotonin. As a result, the person feels more relaxed and balanced. The best known love-related chemical phlenylethylamin or PEA as it is called then works much like Cupid’s arrow : it stimulates erotic sensations and contributes to that top-of-the-world feeling. Another euphoria-inducing chemical in the brain is norepinephrine, which stimulates the production of adrenaline and makes your blood pressure soar when you’re near the person you’re attracted to -- yet another explanation for the pounding heart and sweaty palms when meeting the person one fancies.

Sex with an ex

There you are, sitting alone on a Saturday night, eating stale Doritos and watching reruns of Seinfeld. It wouldn't be so bad, except you have an itch, a sexual itch that is, in need of scratching. You start flipping through your brain's Rolodex and realize that other than the slightly weird person in accounting who flirts with you, there are no real prospects on the horizon. As every breakup is different, doing some analysis might save you heartache when your libido takes over your brain. First, know you are not some freak because you want to have sex with the same person you spent days (maybe weeks or even years) getting all bent out of shape over after the breakup. Sex can comfortably numb the I'm-a-big-fat-loser worries, the short-term pain and panic. It is convenient and semi reliable. As well, yours is an established relationship, so all the preamble of getting to know each other and the weirdness of seeing each other naked does not exist. Now let's look at the other side of this equation. Never fool yourself. As much as you want to believe sex is simply sex and nothing more, the act is a ticking bomb of many emotions waiting to go off. To start with, count the time elapsed since your separation. The fresher the breakup, the stronger both your favourable and angry emotions for this person will be. Conversely, the longer your relationship has been over and done with, the better chance those dormant emotions will be jolted back to life. In this confused moment, the need for sex can be a clever cover for a need of an emotional reconnection with another human being. If the sex is good, you may wonder why you broke up in the first place. Due to these confused emotions, it is easy to start playing the come here/go away game, and moving on may take a lot longer than necessary. Next is being OK with the hard core reality of your situation. Before you have sex, are you willing to re-establishing safe sex practices? Or are you in denial that your partner is not messing around behind your back. Are you ready, in the aftermath of sex, when your ex starts exhibiting the traits that had you breaking up in the first place? Know you will most likely feel empty and unfulfilled, because after he/she leaves, you will again be partnerless. What if he/she never calls you back, and shame-faced you realizes you were simply his/her booty call for the evening? And speaking of which, are you mentally prepared for the eventuality of when your ex tells you he/she has moved on to the next partner? If you are all right with all of this, then go ahead, have tons of protected sex with your ex. If not, take a long cold shower when you feel your resolve wearing thin. Do whatever it takes to stop you from calling him/her. One great thing that comes out of having sex with an ex is the valuable lesson learned: Ultimately, satisfying an urge at the sacrifice of self-worth is never worth it -- even if the sex is amazing. Mistinguett was born as Jeanne Bourgeois in the district of Enghien-les-Bains, in France, on April 3, 1875. Many cabaret historians believe that she was born on December 17, 1872 or 1873. Since childhood, Mistinguett was fascinated by the extravagant life of the rich class, the glitzy streets and buildings of Paris, the fame of the Parisian stars, lights and action of Casino de Paris and other fancy Parisian cabarets and boites de nuits. She was dreaming of becoming a star. At 12, he got her first job as flowers basket vendor at the entrance of Casino de Paris. This was the beginning for the little Jeanne Bourgeois. The beginning of getting as close as possible to a cabaret. It was her first step toward her future grand entrance and smashing appearance on the stage of the Parisian casino. Turkish police have scrambled to defend its anti-corruption efforts as a court formally charged and jailed 19 police officers for taking bribes at a border crossing. Corruption has long been woven into Turkish life. But this week's scandal highlighted a deep-rooted problem in the political and economic system in Turkey, which recently opened membership talks in the EU. The scandal, documented by cameras hidden inside heaters at the Kapikule Customs Gate on the Bulgarian border, is an embarrassment to the three-year-old government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has sworn to wage a war on corruption. In an effort to distance itself from the suspects, Turkey's police made a vigorous anti-corruption statement on Friday. "We don't look at the job titles of the people committing crimes," police spokesman Ismail Caliskan told reporters in Ankara. Late on Friday, a court in Edirne, the closest city to Kapikule in Thrace, charged and jailed 19 officers for "forming an organised crime ring and taking bribes". Earlier, prosecutors released nine other policemen, implicated in the scandal, pending trial. No trial date was set. The arrests follow those of 44 customs officers on Thursday at the same Kapikule Customs Gate on the border between Turkey and Bulgaria. Truckers trying to cross the border were commonly forced to pay 10 euros to passport control, 10 euros to an inspector, another 10 euros to the stamping agent, and 2.5 euros for a bag from duty free, CNN-Turk private television said, quoting one truck driver who said: "Bribery is the law here."

COULD RESEARCHERS ACCIDENTALLY CREATE A VIRUS THAT WIPES OUT ALL HUMANS?

The answer to this has to be yes. It sounds rather like the scenario of a B-grade science fiction movie, but researchers around the world for many years have been creating one deadly virus after another in the laboratory. In January, 2001, Australian researchers experimented with viruses in an attempt to develop a way of controlling mice that plague Australian agriculture. They created a genetically modified (GM) mouse-pox virus. However, this "supervirus" was far more powerful and effective than anyone had predicted. The virus killed off 100% of those mice exposed to it that were not immunized against it. It also killed off half of the mice that had been immunized against it. Mice are genetically rather similar to humans. Isn't that a reassuring thought? The researchers reported their results in The Journal of Virology. In 2000, Japanese researchers, while experimenting with the virus that causes AIDS stumbled onto a way to make HIV grow much faster. CONSIDERING PLASTIC SURGERY?

It is not widely known, but plastic surgery seldom, if ever, uses any plastic. In fact, the name actually has no connection at all with synthetic polymers (i.e., plastics). In this sense, "plastic" derives from the Greek word plastikos meaning "to build up or take form." Plastic surgery deals with the appearance, form and surgical reconstruction of body tissues -- not the use of plastic substances to do so. Plastic surgery is also much older than most people think. The ancient Egyptians, the early Greeks, the Hindus of India and physicians for hundreds of years have attempted to change facial characteristics through surgery of various sorts. However, modern techniques did not develop until after the First World War by surgeons attempting to repair the disfigurement of combat. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons was formed in 1931. This marks the beginning of the true profession of plastic surgery. Breakthroughs in plastic surgery have occurred in the past 20 years. It is popularly believed any surgeon can become a plastic surgeon. This is not true. Plastic surgeons require as much or more postgraduate training than does any other surgical specialty. It is also popularly believed that plastic surgery is a frivolous specialty, concerned only with cosmetic facelifts, breast enlargements, tummy tucks and such. This is also not true. More than 60% of all plastic surgery deals with reconstruction to repair serious damage from burns, injuries or congenital abnormalities.

Less than 40% involves cosmetic surgery for reasons of vanity only. Of these, in one year alone (2002) in just the United States, 6.6 million people had cosmetic plastic surgery of one kind or another. Eighty-five per cent of these were women. The top five "cosmetic surgical procedures" for women were: (1) breast augmentation; (2) liposuction; (3) nose reshaping; (4) eyelid surgery; and (5) facelift. The top five "cosmetic surgical procedures" for men were: (1) nose reshaping; (2) liposuction; (3) eyelid surgery; (4) hair transplantation; and (5) ear surgery. Forty-five per cent of those having cosmetic plastic surgery were aged 35 to 50. Twenty-four per cent were aged 19 to 34. Twenty-two per cent were aged 51 to 64. Six per cent were aged 65 and over. Three per cent were aged 18 and younger.

Chocolate may cut heart disease

Researchers have produced more evidence that dark chocolate may help to reduce the risk of serious heart disease. They found eating a few squares a day may stave off artery narrowing and hardening in smokers by countering the disruption caused by their habit. Smoking compromises the activity of both endothelial cells, which line the artery walls, and platelets, which are involved in blood clot formation. The research, by University Hospital, Zurich, is published in Heart. The researchers compared the effects of dark (74% cocoa solids) and white chocolate on the smoothness of blood flow in the arteries of 20 male smokers. Before eating 40g of chocolate, smokers were asked to abstain from other foods rich in beneficial antioxidants, such as onions, apples, cabbage, and cocoa products for 24 hours. After two hours, ultrasound scans revealed that dark chocolate significantly improved the smoothness of arterial flow - an effect which lasted for eight hours. Blood sample analysis also showed that dark chocolate almost halved platelet activity. Antioxidant levels rose sharply after two hours. White chocolate had no effect on endothelial cells, platelets, or antioxidant levels. The researchers are convinced that the key is the high antioxidant content of dark chocolate, which contains more per gram than other food and drink laden with the substances, such red wine, green tea, and berry fruits. Research published last year by the University of California found antioxidant-rich flavonoids in chocolate helped the blood vessels expand.

Warning: Dr Charmaine Griffiths, of the British Heart Foundation, said: "There is some evidence that when eaten in small quantities, dark chocolate might have some beneficial effects on blood vessels, but as yet no study has investigated the long-terms clinical effects - and this new, small study from Switzerland, does not change that. "The key thing to remember about such studies is that chocolate is a bigger part of the problem than the solution. "Whilst dark chocolate is higher in anti-oxidants, all forms of chocolate are very high in calories (typically about 500 calories per 100g) and contain an average 30% total fat. "We are certainly not suggesting people never eat chocolate - everyone can enjoy a treat from time to time. "But there are much better ways of improving your heart health, such as eating a varied diet, including at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day. "And whatever they eat, the biggest step the smokers in this study could make to reduce their risk of heart disease would be to give up."

The exercise revealed a 180 percent spike in viewership at the time of the -- as Timberlake refers to it -- "wardrobe malfunction." One notable TiVo user apparently unimpressed with the performance of Timberlake and Jackson was FCC chairman Michael Powell, who launched an investigation into the bare-breasted matter. Powell is so taken with TiVo that he once referred to it as "God's machine." This marks the third year that TiVo has released details of its second-by-second review of how Super Bowl viewers used their TiVo units. President Reagan, who died last year aged 93, topped a list of 10 contenders, which featured six former presidents. Some of the most notable names of US history such as Albert Einstein and Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the Moon, did not make the top 10. Talk show host Oprah Winfrey is the highest ranked female contender at ninth place, making her the greatest American woman. George Washington, the first US president who is considered the father of the nation, comes in at fourth place. Current US President George W Bush and his predecessor Bill Clinton, whose presidency was tarnished by the Monica Lewinski sex scandal, are both in the top 10. Some observers suggest the image of Mr Reagan, who was criticised as an intellectual lightweight during his presidency, has been enhanced following his death as millions of Americans cast a rose-tinted look back at his presidency. Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne are apparently the celebrities most people would like to join them for Christmas dinner. A survey was conducted in Ozzy's home town of Birmingham where he received 22 per cent of the vote while his wife was the choice of 29 per cent questioned. David Beckham was the second most popular choice of male guest with 21 per cent of the vote. He was closely followed by King of Pop Robbie Williams. Unfortunately for Becks, his wife Victoria only made it into the poll for the least popular woman to be invited round for Christmas dinner. The poll of 500 people in the Pavilions Shopping Centre found that the least-wanted Christmas gift was socks. The survey also uncovered that more women would like to receive jewellery (22 per cent) than sexy underwear (17 per cent).

London's insiders and the Sun reported that Queen Elizabeth failed to welcome Camilla into her family yesterday — by NOT mentioning Prince Charles’ wedding in her TV speech. It was a major setback for the Duchess of Cornwall as she spent her first Christmas Day with the Royals at Sandringham. Paris Hilton feared for her life after allegedly receiving death threats last year, a Los Angeles court heard last Tuesday. The threats was linked to her ex-boyfriend: softcore porn producer Joe Francis. Francis gave evidence in Los Angeles Superior Court during a preliminary hearing against suspect Darnell Riley, who stands accused of kidnapping and attempted-extortion. Francis claims he found Riley trespassing in his Bel Air, California home on January 22, 2004, and was forced to perform demeaning sex acts on himself, which were videotaped, at gunpoint. Riley also allegedly demanded $1,000 and Francis' Rolex watch, before saying: "I need $100,000 cash, or you're going to die." The case spent most of last year unsolved until Hilton gave police vital information that led to the arrest of Riley, claiming she'd heard Riley's name mentioned in relation to Francis' attack on the Hollywood party scene. Francis testified yesterday that his ex-girlfriend Hilton had spoken to him about Riley at a party in late 2004: "Paris pulled me aside at a party and said, 'I'm being extorted by Darnell Riley for $20,000 a month and he's threatened to kill me if I don't pay."
